A strong low southeast of Hooper Bay will provide southeasterly winds from Thursday to Saturday. This will likely result in minor erosion on the Bay side of Hooper Bay as well as minor water rises to around 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tide line with each high tide cycle from Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning. Strongest wind gusts, up to 55 mph are expected to occur between 7 AM and 10 PM Thursday. There may be a gust to 60 mph but it would be infrequent. After 10 PM Thursday, winds will mainly weaken and be less than 50 mph Friday and Saturday. |

Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - A strong storm projected to move into the eastern Bering Sea will bring heavy rainfall and storm surge to the area. The Kuskokwim River is currently running high, with statistics showing the river is already above the 90th percentile in flow for this time of year. 1 to 2 inches of rainfall across the Kilbuck Mountains, as well as across the lower Kuskokwim, is likely to exacerbate high water levels for the Kwethluk River, Johnson River / tundra villages, as well as other smaller tributaries and sloughs of the Kuskokwim. Confidence is moderate-to-high that flooding of low-lying areas will occur for Kwethluk and Kasigluk, where high-water was reported last week. Southeast winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph Thursday afternoon will diminish early Friday until the low pressure system moves west of the coast by Friday afternoon. Then, winds will become southerly at 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph by Friday afternoon. Winds gradually weaken but remain southerly through Saturday. For Kwigillingok, water levels reach 1.5 to 2.5 feet above the normal highest tide line on Thursday, coinciding with the passage of a frontal system. Water levels could reach up to 5 feet in a worst case scenario. If water levels rise to 2.5 feet, impacts would be comparable to the August 2024 storm. For Kipnuk, the highest water levels of 1 to 2 feet above the normal highest tide line are expected on Friday as a low pressure system moves west of the coast and winds become southerly.
